happy birthday

Today is my husband’s birthday. He’s never been excited about birthdays, particularly his own. I think he underestimates how special he really is to our family. In the hectic rush of every day, I don’t think he realizes how much we love him. He gets to see the kids and the dog rush to greet him when he comes home, but I wish I could give him a glimpse of what the house is like just before that moment.

Every night my oldest asks if he’ll get to see Daddy in the morning, and all day the kids ask when Daddy will be home. When they finally hear the hum of the garage door opening, chaos erupts in the house. I’m usually in the kitchen with the baby trying to get dinner on the table. I hear a thundering of footsteps coming down the stairs – four little bare feet and four big furry ones. “Daddy’s home!!! Daddy’s home!!!”  The bird starts chirping and squawking at all the noise. The baby starts crawling from across the kitchen floor toward the door to the garage. The boys rush to a hiding place (the same hiding place every day) while the dog races to beat the baby to the door. There she sits, waiting for the handle to turn. The baby sits in the doorway, trying to compete with the wagging of the dog’s tail. The boys in their hiding places can hardly contain their giggles and rarely wait until he’s made it through the door before jumping out and yelling “BOO!” Then they run and jump on him, nearly knocking the computer bag, lunch box, and duffel bag from his arms.

So, honey, I know our greeting is a little more boisterous than you would like when you have just come home from a long day at work. But I hope you can see how much you mean to all of us. You are the best part of our day.

That’s great! I’ve always said that my favorite sound in the world is the garage door telling us that daddy is home safe from work. And Happy Birthday to Eric 🙂
