where do we go from here?

November 8, 2008

This post is a little overdue. It is hard to sort through all the post-election thoughts. To be completely honest, my initial reaction was fear, frustration and doubt.  I thought for a few seconds that a miracle might be in the works when Google accidentally called New Jersey for McCain – but that was promptly righted. I think we (we being conservative Christian Republicans) sometimes have a hard time separating our religion and our political party. I have to remind myself sometimes that God is not a Republican. I say that jokingly, but I grew up believing that God was on the side of the Republicans. In reality, I think God cares about as much about political party as he does denomination.

I know that I have an image in my mind of a united America seeking guidance from the one true God. I keep thinking that if the right president will come along, one who is a genuine servant of Christ and at the same time intelligient and respectable enough to captivate the country, the hearts of our people would turn to God. But God’s Word never said that the world would become MORE moral. In fact, it says quite the opposite.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. 2 Timothy 3:1-7

I apologize if this sounds a little gloom and doom, particularly when we have just elected a President who promises hope and change. I’m not trying to say that I think Obama will bring about the end of the world (thought, I’m not NOT saying it either), but I really do think it is time for Christians to realize that we are the minority, and we are only becoming moreso as time goes on. The world is only going to hate us more and more for what we stand for. We will become the enemy.  We are supposed to be strangers in this world, strikingly different from the verse quoted above.

Okay, so what am I saying? With a very popular “Christian” man in the White House, boasting a Christianity that is tolerant and fair, where everyone can find their own way to Heaven, where there is no absolute, no one excluded, no one left behind, real Christianity is going to become extremely unpopular. We will be seen as uneducated intolerant radicals, and it will be very difficult not to jump on the tolerance bandwagon. Now is the time for Christians to get serious about following Christ. We need to know the Word and practice it. We need to be seeking God’s face in everything. We have to stop trying to blend in and live the easy life.

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. I Peter 2:11-17

Very well said! Been reading Revelations lately. Was a bit concerned Obama was the antichrist.
